Alps, August 89 - Matterhorn & Monte Rosa.
26.8.89 - 29.8.89,
We had travelled to Zermatt with the objective of climbing the Matterhorn. A day's walk up the Hornli ridge brought us to the Hornli Hut, where we stayed the night. Rising before dawn for the ascent, we found the mountain covered in a layer of ice, unsafe for climbing.
As the forecast was not set to improve, we walked across to the Monte Rosa hut, as the cold conditions would not stop us getting up Monte Rosa if it remained clear. But after a night in the hut, we found conditions had closes in around the peaks, and we returnes to Zermatt.
Over to Argentiere near Chamonix, where another friend was staying. We took the cable car up to below Aiguille Vert, where we did some ice-climbing practice and sight-seeing before returning home.
