Scotland 23.2.01 to 25.2.01 - Glenshee

Between 23rd and 25th February 2001, Geoff, Dick, Roy and Ian enjoyed the mountains and Isobell & David's hospitality.

Friday 23.2.01 - Glenshee. Carn Aosda (917m)

Despite the high winds, skiers were out in force in Glenshee taking advantage of the new snow. We went up to the back of Butchart's Corrie and in high winds along the ridge to Carn Aosda. The clouds cleared while we were on the summit, and we were back in the car within 2 hours.

Descending towards the valley from the summit of Carn Aosda. A view across to The Cairnwell, from the approach to Carn Aosda.

Saturday 24.2.01 - Glas Maol (1068m), Creag Leacach (987m)

The morning was fine, but by the time we got to Glenshee it was snowing and the clouds were low. The forecast was for improvement, so we set off up the side of the ski tows to Meall Odhair and Glas Maol. As we ascended the icy summit mound of Glas Maol the wind was increasing, and on the summit plateau the route-finding to the cairn was difficult in the cloud. We found the trig point, just visible above the snow, and with some difficulty we had our lunch. A break in the cloud gave us sun and partial views, and we decided to descend by the south ridge of Creag Leacach, mainly to keep the icy wind on our backs. The walk down the ridge would have been pleasant without the 40 mph, -8 degree wind cutting through us. The walk ended with a 75 minute, 2 mile, 800ft height gain walk up the road, the last half mile with the same wind in our faces. We were glad to get back into the shelter of the car!

Sunday 25.2.01 - The Scottish Millennium Wheel

A visit to the construction site for one of Scotland's Millenium projects - a 100' rotary canal boat lift at Falkirk, between the Forth and Clyde canal and the Union Canal to Edinburgh.

The lower part of the site, the piers for the lift, and the upper aqueduct leading to it. The tunnel through the hill under the Antonine Wall, from the basin above the lift.. .
