Scotland 3.5.01 to 7.5.01 - Glencoe, Glenshiel, Pitlochrie
The usual early May trip for Dick, Geoff, Ian, Phil, and Roy. Accommodation on the first and last nights was was with David and Isobell in Auchterarder, the other three nights were at Loch Lochy Youth Hostel
Thursday 3.5.01 - Glencoe. Creise (1100m), Meall a' Bhuiridh (1108m)
The walk started at the White Corries ski-lift car park. It's a fairly stiff climb up the side of the lifts, and onto the first summit, where Phil's birthday was celebrated. From here, a linking ridge descends and climbs back to the ridge of Creise. After walking left to the east top, we retraced our steps then continued to the summit, then down the end of the ridge towards Glencoe and Glen Etive. This was a steep and awkward descent, followed by a traverse back to the car.

Friday 4.5.01 - Glen Shiel
Carn Ghluasaid (957m), Sgurr nan Conbhairean (1110m), Sail
Chaorainn (1002m).
The Ascent was from the military road above Loch Cluanie. The first peak was to the southeast, Carn Ghluasaid, and provided a fine view up to the major peak of Sgurr nan Conbhairean. The rising ridge to this peak included a long snow field. Dick and Ian continued to Sail Chaorainn and back, then traversed the west flanks of Carn Ghluasaid back to the valley.

Saturday 5.5.01 - Glen Shiel, The Five
Sisters of Kintail
Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe (1027m), Sgurr na Carnach (1002), Sgurr
Fhuaran (1068m).
Three of the party set off from the battlefield in Glen Shiel, while Dick and Ian parked the car at Shiel Bridge and returned by bus. Towards the first summit Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe there are several convincing false summits before the real one is reached. Here the two parties re-united, and we celebrated Rosemary Baxter's n.10th birthday over the phone with the help of a cake and a wee bottle.
Two more summits, then a long descent back to Shiel Bridge. In all, a tiring 10 hour day.

Monday 7.5.01 - Ben Vrackie (841m).
The popular walk to Ben Vrackie starts as marked woodland trails and continues as well-made paths, finishing as a staircase to the summit. The party included Isabell, Marian, and Ronnie Cameron. We were overtaken on the way up by a group taking part in a peace run around Europe, starting in Lisbon in March, and ending in Budapest in October.
The southern party set off first from the summit, to start their drive back home. The rest of the party set off more gently, and Marian slipped and hurt her ankle but continued back to the car. She saw the doctor the next day and found she had broken a leg.
Tenerife
Tuesday 14.8.01 - Mount Teide (3718m)
The centre of the island of Tenerife is formed of a high volcanic plateau. The summit cone of Mount Teide is at the north edge of the plateau and rises to 3718m. Teide is mentioned in the ship's log from Christopher Columbus's well-known voyage to America in 1492, as it was erupting as he passed. The last eruption was in 1909, through a vent to the south of the summit.
The ascent of Teide is today achieved by car and cable-car. The last few hundred feet to the summit is only open to those with prior written permission, which must be collected in person, from the parks office in Santa Cruz.
